The program partners with clinics and healthcare providers to remove financial and access barriers to cancer screening. This helps women stay healthy and prevent or catch cancer early, when treatment is most effective. BHSSC is responsible for training clinic staff to implement the program.
Healthy Brain Program
Healthy Brain Program
The Healthy Brain Program leads a statewide initiative to make brain health a public health priority across the lifespan. Through collaboration among healthcare, community, tribal, and public health partners, we’re working to reduce the risk of cognitive decline, promote early detection of dementia, and support individuals and caregivers affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias. At the heart of this work is the South Dakota Healthy Brain Coalition — a multi-sector group aligning programs, policies, and messaging to integrate brain health into existing chronic disease prevention, aging, and community health efforts. Together, we’re building awareness, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring that brain health becomes a routine part of every conversation about overall health and well-being in South Dakota.
The South Dakota Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias State Plan share our vision for a more dementia-friendly state. It highlights what South Dakota is doing—and what you can do—to support people living with dementia and promote brain health in your community. Want to get involved? Join the South Dakota Healthy Brain Coalition to connect with others who are passionate about this work and help put the state plan into action. You can also stay up to date by signing up for our Healthy Brain Newsletter, launching in January 2026, for the latest news, events, and tips for supporting brain health across South Dakota. Contact Kari Senger at ksenger@bhssc.org to get involved or stay connected. Â

SD Violent Death Reporting System (SD-VDRS)
SD Violent Death Reporting System (SD-VDRS)
SD-VDRS is a subdivision of the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS), which is the only state-based anonymous surveillance system that covers all types of violent deaths. The program collects information about the who, what, where, and how of violent deaths and provides insight into why they occurred. The program operates through partnerships with coroners and law enforcement agencies across the state to obtain information to guide prevention efforts, identify emerging issues, and educate our state and communities. BHSSC staff abstract the data from these sources and report it to the national program.
